Andrew Powell ’79 explores postwar Britain in memoir of childhood

Published on May 20, 2026

Andrew Powell ’79 has co-authored After Our Parents Won the War, a memoir that will be available for purchase on Amazon this June (ISBN 979-8-9956058-0-5).

The book revisits the world of a boarding school in 1965, where Andrew and co-author John Miller arrived as boys at the tail end of the British Empire. Trading the grey icons of the postwar generation for new heroes—the Beatles, Muhammad Ali, and the Apollo astronauts—the two authors return to their old haunts decades later to reconstruct the characters of their childhoods through a series of tales.

As a special offer to the Morehead-Cain community, Andrew has pledged to match proceeds from all June sales with a gift to the Morehead-Cain Program.

After Our Parents Won the War will be added to Morehead-Cain’s alumni library, housed in the Dickson Room of the Foundation. The full library catalog is available here.

The end of our fiscal year is coming up on June 30. If you haven’t already, we hope you’ll consider joining your classmates in making a gift to help us reach 55 percent alumni giving participation. Thank you to those who have already made a gift this year!
